Associate Engineer - Drainage

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Associate Engineer to lead drainage design on major infrastructure projects across Victoria and nationally. Based in Melbourne, you will join a multidisciplinary team delivering transport and water‑related solutions for complex, sustainable developments.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of drainage design packages for large‑scale transport and infrastructure projects.
• Provide technical guidance on flood‑related inputs and ensure integration with overall project deliverables.
• Coordinate with civil, hydraulic and environmental engineers to produce coordinated, high‑quality design outputs.
• Mentor junior engineers and oversee their work to maintain design standards.
• Support client relationships by presenting design solutions and addressing technical queries.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of experience in drainage design within an engineering consultancy or similar environment.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex design workstreams.
• Strong communication skills and a client‑focused mindset.
• Demonstrated experience on transport or infrastructure projects in Australia.
