AI Product Engineer
neara · Sydney
Job description
About the role
Neara builds physics-enabled digital twins of electricity grids using machine learning, helping utilities assess risks and optimise investments. This is a new team, and as one of its first AI Product Engineers you will ship LLM and agentic features into a product used by utilities to make decisions about critical infrastructure. You will work closely with the Digitisation and ML Platform groups, which already build the computer vision and machine learning that creates the digital twin.
Key responsibilities
- Design, prototype and ship AI-powered features end to end, from a utility engineer's question to production use.
- Build agentic and retrieval-based systems grounded in the digital twin, simulation outputs and the internal expression language, so every answer is traceable.
- Make AI output trustworthy: design guardrails, refusals, confidence signals and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
- Build the evaluation discipline: eval sets, regression testing, offline and online quality signals, observability, prompt and context versioning, and cost and latency budgets.
- Work with power systems and GIS specialists to ensure the product is engineering-grade.
- Spend time with customers and work with Product, Design and customer-facing teams to decide what to build.
- Set the standard for how engineers build with AI, including the use of coding agents in their own workflow.
Required profile
- 5+ years building and shipping production software, with strong backend or full-stack product engineering.
- Shipped AI features to paying customers in a commercial product and owned them after launch.
- Hands-on experience with retrieval, context engineering, tool use, agent orchestration, structured output and prompt design.
- Can describe an eval approach you built, what it caught and what it missed.
- Strong judgement about where AI should and should not be used, designing for failure modes.
- Comfort working directly with expert users and product teams.
Nice to have
- Shipping into regulated or enterprise environments (data residency, auditability, private deployments, security review).
- Geospatial, 3D, CAD, simulation or other engineering software background.
- Experience with TypeScript/React, Python, Java, Dart/Rust.
- Utilities, energy or critical infrastructure domain knowledge.
What we offer
- Competitive salary and meaningful ESOP.
- Fully flexible working arrangements with a well-stocked office in Redfern.
- Regular office events.
