Staff Production Engineer

About the role

Join Canva's Production Engineering team to build software that shapes how production behaves for hundreds of millions of users. You will be embedded in high‑risk technical domains, improving reliability, efficiency and resilience at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Own a high‑risk technical area such as sharding core data stores, resource utilisation, or distributed‑system challenges.
• Write production‑grade code to instrument, refactor and rebuild components that cause problems at scale.
• Collaborate with product and infrastructure teams, mentor fellow engineers and contribute platform‑wide capabilities.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering reliability work in large‑scale distributed systems.
• Ability to dive into unfamiliar codebases, quickly diagnose issues and implement fixes.
• Demonstrated influence without formal authority, improving systems through technical leadership.

Required skills

• Strong programming in Java, Go, Rust or C++ (systems‑level languages).
• Deep understanding of Linux internals, kernel‑level concepts and networking stack.
• Hands‑on experience with Kubernetes, containerisation and orchestration at production scale.
• Expertise in AWS cloud services and cloud‑native infrastructure.
• Solid knowledge of distributed‑systems patterns: sharding, replication, consistency, leader election, back‑pressure, circuit breakers.
• Observability tooling: tracing, dashboards, alerting, SLO design.
• Performance analysis and profiling of JVM or system‑level processes.
