Site Assistant - 2026 State Election (Port Melbourne)
HOBAN Recruitment · Melbourne
Job description
About the role
HOBAN Recruitment has partnered with a government organisation to deliver the 2026 State Election, hiring a large team of Site Assistants to keep a secure central ballot processing facility in Port Melbourne running safely and efficiently from early November through to mid-December. The work is hands-on, physical and fast-paced in a large warehouse environment, alongside hundreds of others. No election experience is required, as training is provided.
Key responsibilities
- Set up, reconfigure and pack down work areas, benches, tables, chairs and signage across the site
- Receive, unload and move consignments of secure ballot material arriving from voting centres across the state
- Lift, carry, stack and palletise boxes of ballot papers and election material
- Move material between scanning, counting and storage zones using trolleys, pallet jacks and cages
- Keep supply lines flowing so scanning and counting teams always have material
- Follow strict security and chain-of-custody procedures, as every box is tracked
- Maintain a clean, tidy and safe worksite, including waste and recycling management
- Assist with site access, wayfinding and directing workers and visitors
- Support site registration, check-in and check-out at the start and end of each shift
Required profile
- A genuine willingness to do physical work, on your feet and lifting for most of the shift
- Ability to repeatedly lift and carry boxes of up to about 16kg, and to bend, reach, push and pull
- Reliability: turning up on time for every accepted shift
- Safety-first attitude and ability to follow instructions and procedures precisely
- Ability to work respectfully in a large, diverse team under supervision
- Discretion and integrity, as you will work around secure electoral material
- National Police Check with a satisfactory result, obtained before starting
- Full availability across 2 November to 13 December 2026, including weekends and evenings
- Valid working rights in Australia; visa holders are welcome if their visa allows this work
- Age 18 or older, and able to reach the site via the free shuttle, public transport, taxi or rideshare (no parking)
What we offer
- $35.30 per hour, with shift penalties and overtime paid in line with the applicable Award/Agreement
- Weekly pay, every week
- Dedicated HOBAN consultant for the length of the assignment
- Induction and training before the first shift
- Experience on a major state-wide operation to add to your resume
- Ongoing opportunities with HOBAN after the election
The assignment runs from 2 November to 13 December 2026 (42 days), with about 14 shifts per worker, not every day. Shifts are typically 8 hours and include weekends and the election weekend; day, afternoon and night shifts are available. To apply, complete the short application online; successful candidates are contacted for a phone screen, then onboarding, police check and induction.
