Principal Designer – Bridges & Structures (Rail & Metro)

About the role

SMEC is seeking a Principal Designer to lead the design and delivery of bridge and structure solutions for rail and metro projects across Australia and beyond. You will work in a flexible, collaborative environment that encourages innovation and supports professional growth.

Key responsibilities

• Conceptualise and deliver bridge designs for rail and metro infrastructure projects.
• Define project workflows and establish efficient drafting processes from inception.
• Develop and implement custom Revit families, Dynamo scripts, and automation tools to improve accuracy and productivity.
• Create tailored scripts and workflows to meet project deliverables efficiently.
• Collaborate closely with engineers and multidisciplinary teams to ensure high‑quality outputs.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the design and drafting team.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or an Advanced Diploma.
• 10–15 years of experience in bridge design.
• Expert‑level proficiency in Revit, including advanced family creation and parametric modelling.
• Strong experience with Dynamo scripting, automation, and process optimisation.
• Ability to develop internal Revit tools and standards.
• Deep understanding of bridge detailing, verification, and set‑out processes.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively in a small, high‑performing team.
