Legal Counsel – Scams Prevention

About the role

Join AFCA’s Scams Prevention Framework as a Legal Counsel and help shape a national external dispute resolution scheme that will protect Australians from scam‑related complaints across banking, telecommunications and digital platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct primary‑source legal research on evolving scams legislation, regulations and case law.
• Draft high‑quality legal advice, briefing papers, submissions and correspondence for the Scams EDR Program.
• Support decision‑makers and broader AFCA teams with legal guidance.
• Monitor and interpret regulatory developments, including SPF rules and ASIC guidance.
• Prepare executive and board‑level briefings.
• Contribute to internal training and capability uplift.
• Identify and escalate emerging legal and regulatory risks.
• Engage with government, regulators and external stakeholders on behalf of AFCA.

Required profile

• 2–5 years post‑qualification experience in financial services, insurance, telecommunications, digital platforms, administrative or regulatory law.
• Strong legal research and statutory interpretation abilities.
• Proven skill in translating complex legal concepts into clear, plain‑English advice.
• Excellent drafting skills for briefings, memos and formal correspondence.
• Intellectual curiosity and comfort navigating ambiguity in a new regulatory environment.
• Collaborative, proactive approach aligned with AFCA’s values.
• Experience in a law firm, regulator or industry body is highly regarded.
