Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

About the role

Sitemate builds software and AI agents for the built world, serving construction, infrastructure and industrial companies. Its Melbourne engineering team of about 42 engineers sits in the EPD function, and the CTO reports to the CEO and sits on the executive team. This is a hands-on, builder-first executive role: you own the engineering delivery system, the engineering organisation and its operating cadence, and you ship alongside your team. The position is hybrid, with 2 days in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Own the engineering delivery system: Global Platform, EPD Ops, release engineering, QA infrastructure, security posture and engineering tooling
• Own the engineering organisation: org design, career tracks and levels, compensation architecture and hiring bar
• Set the quarterly engineering initiative plan, the breakdown standard and the scoreboard that shows progress
• Develop Staff Engineers and Tech Leads, and manage the engineering function leads and operations partners
• Turn AI-assisted engineering into throughput to production, decouple deploy from release, and own the verification layer (typing, schema contracts, QA and security testing)
• Shape the forward-deployed engineering model and represent engineering to the CEO, the executive team and the board

Required profile

• Has led engineering through a high-growth, high-change period, ideally including a scale-up transition
• Thrive with ambiguity and have direct, hands-on experience with AI-assisted or agentic code review and delivery tooling
• Have hired and developed staff-level engineers and technical leads
• Prefer in-person, embedded leadership and raise uncomfortable truths early

Required skills

• Must: diagnose and remove delivery bottlenecks, deep hands-on technical knowledge, agentic delivery infrastructure (sandboxes, eval harnesses, deterministic gates), and a track record of compressing timelines
• Essential tools: TypeScript / JavaScript, Node.js, React or Angular, MongoDB, AWS or a comparable cloud platform
• Bonus: React Native, observability tools (HyperDX, Datadog, Bugsnag, Sentry), infrastructure as code (CDK, Terraform), feature flag and release engineering platforms
