Principal Legal Officer

About the role

The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage is seeking a Principal Legal Officer to lead reform activities and deliver a legislative and governance framework that meets government and community expectations. This senior legal role is based in the Renewable Energy Directorate, Land Use Management, and provides highly responsive legal services to the department.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the preparation of legal advice on current issues and legislative/regulatory frameworks affecting Crown land.
• Drive reform initiatives and ensure delivery of a robust legislative and governance framework.
• Provide responsive, customer‑focused legal services across the department.
• Manage and motivate a legal team to achieve high‑quality outcomes.
• Engage with senior stakeholders, negotiate complex matters, and resolve conflicts.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Law degree and admission to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia (or equivalent approval).
• Extensive knowledge and experience in commercial law, Crown property law, native title, administrative law, and legislative drafting.
• Strong research ability and capacity to produce accurate, practical advice within tight timeframes.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to motivate and empower teams.
• Ability to exhibit core leadership behaviours as outlined in the department’s Leadership Expectations.
