About the role

The University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is hiring a Lecturer in Marine Spatial Ecology to lead a cross‑disciplinary programme that uses marine mammals, seabirds and fish as sentinels of ecosystem health. The role combines high‑impact research, teaching, and engagement with government, industry and Indigenous partners.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and conduct quantitative analyses of animal movement data (tracking and telemetry) and integrate these with oceanographic, genetic and disease‑ecology information.
  • Secure external competitive funding, publish research findings and contribute to national and international scientific standing.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, coordinate a Masters unit and develop new curriculum content.
  • Supervise higher‑degree research students (MSc and PhD) and support their professional development.
  • Lead collaborative projects with government agencies, industry stakeholders and Indigenous communities.
  • Contribute to Centre governance and strategic planning to position IMAS as a national leader in movement‑based ecosystem health science.

Required profile

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Marine Ecology, Marine Science, Spatial Analysis or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research track record in field‑based animal movement ecology.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising higher‑degree research students.
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills with diverse partners.
  • Ability to independently lead research projects and grant applications.
