Guide Dog Trainer – Full-time

About the role

As a Guide Dog Trainer you will be at the heart of Guide Dogs WA’s mission, preparing young dogs to become trusted partners for people with vision impairment. This hands‑on, active role involves daily walking, bending and responding to each dog’s developmental needs while working closely with volunteers and the wider community.

Key responsibilities

• Assess dogs for suitability to continue in the Guide Dog programme.
• Test dogs’ responses to environmental stimuli and monitor social behaviour, including home assessments.
• Design and implement measurable training plans based on individual characteristics.
• Identify health issues, refer to veterinary staff and support treatment plans.
• Apply IGDF and organisational training standards throughout the training process.
• Collaborate with the Puppy Development team, providing technical support as required.
• Liaise with volunteers, assist with recruitment, training and relationship building.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including formal temperament assessments.
• Participate in fundraising and public‑relations events as needed.

Required profile

• Physically able to perform frequent walking, bending and handling of young dogs.
• Strong empathy and communication skills for working with volunteers and clients.
• Experience or demonstrated ability in dog handling, behaviour assessment and training.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow strict welfare and safety standards.
