Team Leader – Appeals Unit

About the role

The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) is seeking an experienced Team Leader to head its Appeals Unit. In this role you will guide a high‑performing team that delivers impartial, evidence‑based decisions for Queensland workers, employers and insurers across a range of tribunals and courts.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a team through regular feedback, mentoring and performance conversations.
• Undertake tribunal and court appearances, modelling best practice for the team.
• Allocate and oversee appeal matters to ensure timely, consistent, high‑quality outcomes.
• Provide technical guidance on complex legislative, policy and procedural issues.
• Monitor emerging case law and legislative changes and embed them in practice.
• Develop and deliver technical guidance, procedures and training.
• Build productive relationships with insurers, legal representatives, medical and rehabilitation professionals, and other stakeholders.
• Contribute to business improvement initiatives that enhance service quality and efficiency.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading and developing teams, including coaching and performance management.
• Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder‑management abilities.
• Capacity to represent the organisation in tribunal or court settings.
• Ability to interpret and apply legislation, case law and model litigant principles.

Required skills

• Leadership and people‑management skills.
• Technical knowledge of Queensland workers’ compensation, work health and safety, electrical safety and labour hire legislation.
• Analytical skills for interpreting complex legal and policy documents.
