Software Engineer - Real-Time Systems

About the role

Metro, which operates and maintains Melbourne's train service since 2009, is hiring a newly created permanent full-time Software Engineer for its Collins Street office. You will work on critical customer information and fleet management systems that help passengers navigate the network and support staff managing train operations. Your work supports real-time systems and contributes to new software and system updates for major projects such as Level Crossing Removals, Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 and X'Tropolis 2.0 Train Fleet.

Key responsibilities

• Complete tasks across the software development lifecycle on real-time mission-critical systems and business systems using a range of technologies.
• Liaise with engineers, technical staff and system users on setting up hardware, software and operating system environments, integration, problem resolution and system configuration.
• Investigate and resolve complex system issues and software defects, implement changes across large interdependent systems and take part in extended technical validation.
• Respond to and resolve software issues according to agreed service level agreements and key performance indicators.
• Prepare engineering and support documentation.
• Work on the 24/7 support roster, on call after hours; the position requires being present in the office three days per week.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in IT, Computer Science or Software Engineering.
• Experience performing a variety of software engineering tasks across the SDLC.
• Able to produce high-quality software solutions in a team environment.

Required skills

• Linux platforms with a broad range of technologies and programming languages.
• Java, C++, JavaScript, Angular, React, SQL, Python, Bash and Kafka.
