Software Engineer (Full Stack, Functional Programming)

About the role

REA Group is hiring a permanent Software Engineer in Melbourne for its Advertising and Value business, which connects real estate agents with property seekers on realestate.com.au. The team works with experienced full-stack engineers in Melbourne and Xi'an, and reports to a Principal Engineer, Engineering Manager and Staff Engineer.

Key responsibilities

• Work with a team of experienced full-stack engineers to deliver solutions aligned with the technical vision.
• Inform delivery planning and technical design with a balanced view of options, effort and quality.
• Keep up with technology trends to shape product and technical design.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of products, technology, processes and team development.
• Learn continuously through evaluation and skill development.

Required profile

• Mid-level engineer with a passion for learning new programming languages, especially functional programming (Kotlin, TypeScript).
• Ability to work in pair programming and independently, and to collaborate with other teams and stakeholders.
• Bonus: experience in a distributed team, delivering under tight deadlines, and designing microservices and distributed systems.

Required skills

• Full-stack web development and systems built with cloud technologies (AWS EC2, Lambda, SNS, SQS, S3, basic networking).
• Two or more programming languages, e.g. TypeScript, React, Kotlin, Java.
• Modern techniques: functional programming, object-oriented programming, test-driven development, CI/CD.
• Agile environment and SDLC; microservices, REST APIs, GraphQL, Kafka or SQS (desirable).
• Data pipelines with Airflow, BigQuery and relational databases (desirable).
