Senior Systems Engineer (Mainframe Storage)

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer (Mainframe Storage) to join its Mainframe Platform Engineering team in Sydney. You will engineer, maintain and continuously improve the IBM Z infrastructure, z/OS systems and storage platforms that underpin critical banking services, working across hardware, storage, systems engineering, resilience, automation and emerging AI-assisted engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Engineer and enhance IBM Z, z/OS and mainframe storage infrastructure with a focus on availability, resilience, security and performance.
• Support hardware installations, upgrades, capacity changes, storage migrations and technology refreshes.
• Design storage infrastructure including DASD, storage subsystems, logical volumes, FICON and SAN connectivity.
• Analyse storage utilisation, I/O performance, channel activity and system capacity to identify and fix performance constraints.
• Diagnose complex hardware, storage, operating system and performance issues and drive root-cause analysis and permanent fixes.
• Support storage replication, disaster recovery and resilience, and take part in recovery testing.
• Develop automation and tooling that improves provisioning, monitoring, maintenance and operations.
• Explore responsible use of AI-assisted engineering for troubleshooting, automation, documentation and analysis.

Required profile

• Solid experience in mainframe infrastructure engineering, systems programming, storage engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Strong engineering judgement, curiosity and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and solve problems across technical boundaries.
• Experience across several of the listed technologies is an advantage; deep expertise in every technology is not expected.

Required skills

• IBM Z infrastructure and z/OS (JES2, TSO/E, ISPF, JCL)
• Mainframe storage: DASD, capacity management, performance optimisation
• DS8000 and TS7 storage, FICON/SAN connectivity or mainframe I/O architecture
• Replication and DR: GDPS, HyperSwap, Metro Mirror or Global Mirror
• Monitoring and diagnostics: RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON or similar
• Automation or scripting: REXX, Ansible, Python or related tools
• Delivering complex infrastructure changes safely in large-scale, business-critical environments
