Senior System Administrator – Storage

About the role

Join CSIRO's Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre as a Senior System Administrator for Storage, providing technical leadership for large‑scale research storage platforms supporting Australia’s national research computing capability.

Key responsibilities

• Lead operation, maintenance and optimisation of object storage (Ceph) and tape archive infrastructure.
• Perform complex troubleshooting, problem resolution and continuous improvement across storage services.
• Provide technical leadership across storage, cloud, HPC, Linux and supporting platform technologies.
• Manage archive workflows, data movement, automation and re‑archiving activities.
• Carry out hands‑on tasks including server, storage, tape library and networking hardware maintenance.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures and knowledge resources.
• Support service delivery through incident, request and change management processes.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure reliable and efficient services for research users.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary or graduate qualification in Science, Computing or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience administering Linux or Unix systems.
• Experience operating HSM, tape archive or object‑based backup solutions (e.g., TSM, Bacula) and Ceph or other SAN storage technologies.
• Ability to develop and apply knowledge of complex, interconnected systems, including networking, system logging and high‑performance file systems.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work independently while providing guidance to a team.
