Senior Software Engineer, Digital Archive

About the role

Nine, Australia's largest locally owned media company, is running a major project to digitise and productise its 195-year archive of Australian broadcast media, film and publications. As Senior Software Engineer on the Digital Archive team, you will lead the foundational design of a new suite of AI-powered products that make this history accessible to internal creators and external markets. This is a 12-month contract.

Key responsibilities

• Design a highly scalable, robust and performant infrastructure for ingesting, processing and preserving large multi-media datasets.
• Build the foundational software architecture integrating machine learning to enrich content, enabling intelligent accessibility and smart discovery.
• Define distributed system architectures and ensure seamless cloud integration.
• Mentor engineering teams and explain complex architectural decisions to senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders.

Required profile

• 6+ years of progressive software engineering experience in enterprise-level platforms.
• Proven track record of designing and implementing highly scalable, robust and performant architectures.
• Exceptional technical leadership, mentoring abilities and communication skills.
• Must already have the right to lawfully work and live in Australia.

Required skills

• Golang or Java for building and maintaining applications.
• Cloud infrastructure and services (AWS, GCP or Azure) for high-throughput data pipelines and digital preservation.
• Experience integrating machine learning or AI into content enrichment and product suites.
• Desirable: MAM, digital archiving, video tech or high-volume digitisation; metadata standards such as PREMIS and METS; Terraform and Kubernetes/Cloud Run; information security assessment methods.
