Senior Research Associate

About the role

The University of New South Wales is seeking a Senior Research Associate/Post‑Doctoral Fellow (Level B) to lead cutting‑edge research in generative artificial intelligence for ocean current forecasting and ship‑route optimisation. This fixed‑term position (approximately nine months) is part of the TRaCE‑funded project aimed at decarbonising Australia’s Scope 3 transport supply chain emissions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement AI‑driven ocean forecasting models, including data assimilation and reinforcement‑learning techniques.
• Develop generative AI systems for accurate ocean‑current predictions and optimise maritime routes.
• Conduct independent research, publish findings, and contribute to the scholarly impact of the discipline.
• Collaborate with CounterCurrent Pty Ltd and internal UNSW teams to translate research into commercial applications.
• Mentor postgraduate students and junior researchers, supervising HDR projects where applicable.
• Assist in preparing competitive grant proposals and participate as co‑investigator on funded projects.

Required profile

• PhD in Data Science, Climate Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience in AI ocean forecasting, data assimilation, and reinforcement learning.
• Strong publication record and ability to work with limited supervision.
• Experience supervising or mentoring graduate students is desirable.

• Salary Level B: $127 K – $150 K plus 17 % superannuation and annual‑leave loading.
