Senior Legal Officer

About the role

We are seeking two permanent Senior Legal Officers to join the Strategic Policy and Legislation team within Queensland’s Department of Justice. The role will focus on developing and implementing legislative and policy projects related to criminal law and criminal justice, contributing to law reform across the state.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑level advice on complex justice policy issues and develop strategic options.
• Lead the design, drafting and coordination of primary and subordinate legislation in the criminal law portfolio.
• Manage legislative and policy projects from inception to implementation, ensuring timelines are met.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including the Human Rights Unit, to shape policy outcomes.
• Analyse emerging trends in criminal law, sentencing, procedure and organised crime to inform government decisions.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to understand key issues and emerging trends in criminal law and justice policy.
• Proven experience providing strategic advice on complex policy and legislative matters.
• Strong project management skills with the capacity to adjust priorities quickly.
• Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation abilities.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
