Senior Legal Officer

About the role

The Senior Legal Officer will provide expert legal advice and strategic support to the Parole Board Queensland, ensuring sound decision‑making across complex and sensitive matters. This role combines high‑level legal analysis with leadership to guide the Board through legislative, case‑law and risk‑mitigation challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare legal reports, correspondence and briefing notes for Board deliberations.
• Liaise with Crown Law, external counsel and other legal providers.
• Conduct rigorous legal research and analysis on case law, statutes and policy frameworks.
• Represent the Board in Supreme Court directions hearings and other judicial proceedings.
• Advise on legislative governance, risk mitigation and potential ministerial reviews.
• Support the development and implementation of legal standards and procedures.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with extensive experience in criminal or corrections law.
• Demonstrated ability to manage high‑stakes legal matters independently.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a focus on accuracy and timeliness.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of presenting complex legal concepts clearly.
• Proven leadership and collaborative abilities within a public‑sector environment.

Required skills

• Legal research and statutory interpretation.
• Preparation of legal documentation and briefing materials.
• Experience appearing in court, particularly Supreme Court directions hearings.
• Knowledge of Queensland corrections legislation and parole processes.
