About the role
The Senior Inspection Officer supports the Queensland Ombudsman and the Inspector of Detention Services in delivering the objectives of the Inspector of Detention Services Act. The role focuses on promoting humane treatment of detainees and ensuring detention facilities operate in line with legal and ethical standards.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, conduct and report on inspections of detention facilities, including youth centres, prisons and watch‑houses.
- Review large volumes of departmental documents, develop lines of enquiry and support fieldwork.
- Interview community stakeholders, service providers and detainees, respecting cultural and vulnerability considerations.
- Produce high‑quality analysis and documentation that underpin recommendations to prevent torture, cruel or degrading treatment.
- Draft inspection reports for tabling in Parliament within tight timeframes.
- Contribute to the development of inspection standards, methods and policy reviews.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, policy developments and international best practice.
Required profile
- Relevant professional background in public administration, law, human rights or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience conducting inspections, investigations or reviews in a regulated environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong analytical skills and capacity to handle confidential information.
