Senior Data Scientist - GenAI and Agentic AI

About the role

CommBank is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to report to the AI Domain Lead within Retail Banking Services (RBS). You will deliver high-priority AI initiatives across RBS, building world-class AI capabilities that also strengthen the wider bank. The role focuses on GenAI, agentic AI and broader AI, with a strategic aim of delighting customers at every touchpoint.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop GenAI and agentic systems, expanding the adoption of generative AI solutions across RBS and optimising product offerings.
• Lead the overhaul of machine learning models to drive strategic business outcomes for stakeholders.
• Identify AI opportunities and embed AI methodologies into a broader range of banking activities.
• Work closely with business stakeholders to pioneer the adoption of cutting-edge AI and GenAI capabilities.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or a related field.
• Proven experience in GenAI, chatbot development and LLMs.
• Strong foundation in statistics and probability, able to interpret models.
• Excellent communication skills for documentation and stakeholder engagement.

Required skills

• Python and experience with AI/ML model development.
• Generative AI: prompt engineering, RAG, guardrail design, orchestration design, LangChain and LangGraph.
• Agentic AI: autonomous or semi-autonomous agents, intent/task orchestration, tool use, multi-step decision-making, guardrails (LangGraph, pydantic_ai).
• Machine learning: feature engineering, model selection, hyperparameter tuning, evaluation and deployment of predictive models.
• Version control and CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub.
• Data science tools: Spark, Python, R, TensorFlow, PyTorch and SQL.
• ETL processes and data pipeline construction.
• Docker for containerisation and deployment.
• AWS or Azure cloud architecture and integration.
