Job description
About the role
The University of Queensland's Poche Centre for Indigenous Health is recruiting a Senior Community Engagement Officer for its RISE research program, which applies a precision public health approach to help eliminate curable sexually transmitted infections and improve STI management in Central Queensland. The role provides communications and community engagement support, working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, health services and community partners. It is based in Rockhampton, full-time or part-time (80% to 100%) for up to 2 years, with a base salary of $97,269 to $104,349 plus 17% super (HEW Level 6). The position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates only, as a genuine occupational requirement.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate and facilitate the co-design and implementation of interventions with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and community coalitions in line with the RISE research protocol.
- Build trusted relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, community organisations, healthcare workers, research partners and other stakeholders across Central Queensland.
- Develop accessible written and visual content for websites, brochures, newsletters, social media and other community-facing publications, turning complex research evidence into clear health messages.
- Support stakeholder and consumer events, respond to information requests and maintain strategic relationships with organisations involved in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and STI communication.
Required profile
- Must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person; evidence of this is required.
- Demonstrated experience in research translation or stakeholder engagement, and in healthcare delivery or a health research services environment.
- Proven record of delivering communication outcomes across online services, publications and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Ability to travel significantly between community locations, including two to three days per week and regular travel to the Brisbane office; a vehicle will be provided for approved community travel.
- Unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of the appointment; pre-employment checks may include right-to-work verification, criminal history and mandatory immunisations.
What we offer
- Up to 26 weeks of paid parental and primary care leave.
- 17% superannuation and 17.5% leave loading.
- Flexible and hybrid working options, health and wellbeing programs, a Study for Staff program, on-campus childcare, affordable parking and salary packaging.
- Cultural leave and support from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Staff Network.
Applications close 15 November 2026; interviews are tentatively scheduled for 18 November 2026. Apply through the university careers portal with a resume and cover letter.
