Senior Associate / Special Counsel – General Insurance

About the role

McCabes is seeking a highly skilled Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join its General Insurance team on a full‑time basis. The role spans both the Insurance and Government divisions, handling complex general liability matters for leading insurers and government clients across NSW.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee and manage a diverse caseload of general liability claims, including large catastrophic losses.
• Provide mentorship and supervision to junior lawyers, supporting their professional development.
• Represent clients in negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings with confidence.
• Deliver ongoing legal advice throughout the litigation process.
• Work autonomously while maintaining high‑quality client representation.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) with a current NSW practising certificate.
• Minimum 5 years post‑admission experience in liability or professional indemnity, including insurance policy advice and coverage disputes.
• Strong knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure, and relevant legislation.
• Proven ability to mentor and supervise junior lawyers.
• Exceptional research, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Commercial mindset with effective negotiation capabilities.
