Security Analyst

About the role

The Security Analyst will join Hume City Council's Cyber team to protect information systems and data integrity. Reporting to the Security Operations Lead, you will monitor, investigate and respond to cyber threats, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor security systems, networks and applications to identify potential threats and anomalies.
• Conduct triage, containment and remediation during security incidents.
• Analyse security logs from multiple sources to detect suspicious activity.
• Perform vulnerability assessments and security evaluations to uncover weaknesses.
• Document incidents, findings and remediation actions.
• Collaborate with the IT team to apply security patches and preventive measures.
• Stay updated on emerging threats, vulnerabilities and industry best practices.
• Assist in developing and enforcing information security policies.
• Prepare security reports and metrics for management and compliance purposes.

Required profile

• Ability to select appropriate methods, technologies and processes from available alternatives.
• Strong understanding of the technology, procedures and processes used within the unit.
• Awareness of senior staff roles, long‑term unit goals and wider organisational objectives.
• Knowledge of relevant policies, regulations and precedents.
• Effective time‑management, prioritisation and planning skills.
• Familiarity with basic personnel policies, equal employment opportunity and occupational health and safety.
• Capability to gain cooperation from clients, the public and colleagues.

Required skills

• Knowledge of security monitoring, incident response and vulnerability assessment processes.
