Seagoing Software Engineer & Data Analyst

About the role

CSIRO is looking for a Seagoing Software Engineer and Data Analyst to support scientific voyages aboard the RV Investigator. Based in Hobart, the role blends on‑shore development work with up to 85 days per year of on‑board duties, ensuring high‑quality data collection and delivery for ocean research.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain on‑premises software that gathers, stores and streams real‑time scientific data in a remote maritime environment.
• Deploy, configure and support Windows and Linux physical and virtual servers, workstations and network equipment.
• Operate shipboard data acquisition systems, perform validation, visualisation and quality control of marine datasets.
• Provide ICT support to crew and scientists, troubleshooting hardware, firmware and software issues.
• Maintain the vessel’s network and off‑ship communication infrastructure.
• Collaborate with scientists to process, visualise and publish high‑quality datasets.

Required profile

• Willingness to spend 3‑8 weeks at sea on research voyages (up to 85 days per year).
• Background in ICT, software engineering or data analysis; training and mentoring will be provided.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
