Registered Nurse (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) - Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit

About the role

Gold Coast Health is recruiting several Registered Nurses (identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) for its Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU). The unit provides person-centred mental health care for consumers with complex mental health and addiction issues, supporting recovery for consumers, their families and the wider community. The new 40-bed unit started services in March 2025, with the second 20-bed ward opening in mid-2026.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direction and education to other staff, including casual staff, graduate nurses and students
• Assist in collecting clinical outcome data
• Help ensure effective, efficient communication that delivers culturally safe care and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inpatients
• Support a strategic approach to developing contemporary human resource practices

Required profile

• Genuine occupational requirement under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community
• Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent, with registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
• Evidence of vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, pertussis and hepatitis B, or ability to be vaccinated and stay vaccinated
• Tuberculosis screening; criminal history screening is required for new employees (cost covered by the employer)
• Declaration of a serious discipline history must be made
