Principal Software Engineer - Mobile Platform

About the role

Canva is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead the Mobile Platform team in Sydney. You will shape the architecture that powers Canva’s iOS and Android experiences, enabling product teams to deliver native‑looking features across devices.

Key responsibilities

• Define and own the technical direction of the hybrid stack, including React, React Native, Bazel and supporting native libraries.
• Design a reusable, high‑performance platform that can be deployed to iOS, Android and web runtimes.
• Ship production‑ready code within the first six months, delivering features to millions of users.
• Build core mobile capabilities and runtime components that other product teams will rely on.
• Lead by example, staying hands‑on in the codebase rather than focusing on abstract architecture diagrams.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading large‑scale cross‑platform engineering initiatives.
• Strong hands‑on development background with a focus on mobile performance and scalability.
• Ability to work in a fast‑moving environment and ship features quickly.
• Excellent collaboration skills to work with product, design and infrastructure teams.
