Principal Mining Engineer

About the role

BUMA Australia is seeking a Principal Mining Engineer to join its corporate office in South Brisbane. The role will support current mine operations and upcoming tender opportunities by delivering high‑impact mine planning and technical studies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide short‑term planning resources and support for operating sites.
• Develop medium‑ and long‑term mine plans for existing operations.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers.
• Stay current with technical advances to keep planning methods competitive.
• Participate in reviews, studies and implementation of mine‑planning activities.
• Assist in site‑based projects aimed at best‑practice outcomes.
• Supply mine‑planning and design services for proposals and tenders.
• Verify planning data used in tender preparation for accuracy and uniformity.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in mining, civil engineering or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of open‑cut mining experience.
• Experience with coal and/or hard‑rock mine design and operations.
• Exposure to life‑of‑mine optimisation, pre‑feasibility studies and long‑term scheduling.
• Strong analytical and technical abilities related to mining activities and equipment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with mining CAD and scheduling software.
• Experience using Deswik.
• Experience using SPRY.
• Competent use of the Microsoft Office suite.
