Member Advisor

About the role

The Member Advisor provides high‑level legal, research and administrative support to members of the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT). Working under the supervision of the Manager, Mediation, the role involves preparing members for mediations, hearings, inquiries and arbitration, and may include conducting mediations with approval.

Key responsibilities

• Assist NNTT members in preparing for mediations, hearings, inquiries and arbitration.
• Conduct or co‑mediate mediations where authorised by the member.
• Liaise with other NNTT teams to deliver administrative, research and secretarial support.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislative frameworks, case law, guidelines and regulations relevant to the Tribunal.
• Alert internal stakeholders to significant changes in law or policy.
• Apply records and information management practices in line with NNTT policy.
• Support Directors in legal advice, Federal Court proceedings and preparation of briefs, research papers and reports.

Required profile

• Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Proven culturally appropriate engagement and communication skills.
• Ability to work with confidential material and limited direction.
• Willingness to provide a reference from an Indigenous referee where possible.
