Media Advisor – Faculty of Science & Engineering

About the role

Macquarie University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking a Media Advisor to raise the Faculty’s profile through strategic media engagement and compelling storytelling. You will work at the intersection of research, media and communications, turning complex scientific discoveries into news‑worthy stories for national and international audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and pitch media opportunities that showcase research, academic expertise and achievements of staff, students and alumni.
• Collaborate with Faculty stakeholders to align stories with media trends and strategic priorities.
• Build and maintain relationships with key journalists and media outlets.
• Write media releases and articles for The Lighthouse, tailoring content for diverse audiences.
• Support editorial decisions to prioritise stories based on relevance and media interest.
• Deliver media training programmes for researchers and staff.
• Monitor and evaluate media coverage, measuring the impact of media strategies.
• Assist with media responses during crises or sensitive issues.
• Participate in an out‑of‑hours on‑call roster to handle breaking stories and urgent enquiries.

Required profile

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to translate complex research into clear, engaging narratives.
• Strong understanding of media landscapes and experience working with journalists.
• Ability to work collaboratively across academic and communications teams.
• Flexibility to respond to media enquiries outside normal working hours.

• Full‑time, 12‑month fixed‑term appointment.
• Salary range $114,992 – $124,676 per annum plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.
