Media Advisor – Communications and PR Specialist

About the role

CSIRO is looking for a Media Advisor to amplify its scientific achievements through earned and owned media. You will manage the Media Centre, triage media enquiries, and help shape compelling stories that raise CSIRO’s profile.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the primary liaison for media outlets, handling phone and email enquiries, including out‑of‑hours requests.
• Upload and distribute media releases via CSIRO’s website and newswire services.
• Provide advice and training to communication staff on media release content.
• Identify storytelling opportunities and develop multi‑platform media campaigns.
• Support research units by pitching stories and ensuring optimal media coverage.
• Write and contribute to media releases, owned articles, social and digital content, videos and other multimedia assets.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, communication, public relations or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated media relations experience in public relations or journalism.
• Strong news sense, storytelling ability and visual communication skills.
• Understanding of how social and digital media intersect with traditional media.
• Ability to work flexibly, including occasional out‑of‑hours coverage.
