Mechanical Engineer - Smelter Projects

About the role

Mount Isa Mines is hiring a Mechanical Engineer for its Smelter Projects team in Mount Isa, Queensland. The role delivers mechanical projects across a large-scale processing operation, working closely with operations, maintenance and project teams to provide practical engineering solutions, improve plant performance and deliver projects from concept through to commissioning. It is a hands-on, field-based position.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver mechanical projects safely, on time and within budget
• Develop project scopes, engineering solutions and execution plans
• Coordinate design, procurement, fabrication and installation activities
• Support commissioning and project handover
• Build strong working relationships with operational and maintenance teams
• Identify opportunities to improve plant reliability, safety and productivity
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards, statutory requirements and site procedures

Required profile

• Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
• Experience in mining, minerals processing, heavy industry, manufacturing or a similar environment
• Experience across project scoping, design, fabrication, installation and commissioning
• Strong planning, problem-solving and organisational skills
• Commitment to safety leadership and continuous improvement
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Project management systems
