Legal Support Officer (Student Placement)

About the role

This position offers penultimate or final year LLB/Juris Doctor students the chance to work within the Legal Services Branch of a leading Victoria Public Service department. You will gain practical insight into government legal operations while supporting business and litigation functions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide administrative support for filing and record management using LEX, TRIM and Microsoft Teams.
• Enter data, print, photocopy and scan documents accurately.
• Coordinate and triage requests from central inboxes, responding to queries and redirecting as needed.
• Assist solicitors and paralegals with drafting precedent forms, correspondence and other legal documents.
• Prepare court books, briefs and Legal Services Orders.
• Brief counsel, obtain quotes from panel firms, and support budget and matter management.
• Seek instructions and cost approvals from clients and support leadership on projects.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor program (penultimate or final year).
• Motivated, proactive, with good judgment and strong oral and written communication.
• Detail‑oriented with the ability to review documents methodically and correct errors.
• Australian citizen, permanent resident or holder of a valid work permit/visa.

Required skills

• Experience with LEX (legal matter management system).
• Familiarity with TRIM Content Management System.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Teams.
• Data entry and document drafting abilities.
