Legal Support Officer

About the role

The Legal Support Officer provides essential legal research and administrative assistance to the Registrar and the Manager, Legal & Compliance of the Tribunal. The role supports the management of native title registers and ensures statutory obligations under the Native Title Act are met.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal research and provide legal support for the Tribunal’s functions.
• Assist with ad‑hoc requests and projects as directed by the Manager, Legal & Compliance.
• Administer non‑claimant native title determination applications, including processing, stakeholder communication and notifications.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Commonwealth and State legislation relevant to native title matters.
• Apply approved records and information management practices in line with Tribunal policies.
• Work independently, set priorities and manage competing workloads to deliver quality outputs.
• Engage with external clients and stakeholders, representing the Tribunal positively.
• Perform other duties as reasonably required.

Required profile

• Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Ability to communicate sensitively and demonstrate cultural respect.
• High attention to detail with strong administrative and organisational skills.
• Capability to meet tight deadlines and manage competing priorities.
• Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Well‑developed interpersonal skills for building positive stakeholder relationships.
