Legal Officer

About the role

The NSW Electoral Commission is seeking a Legal Officer to provide expert legal and policy advice on electoral law matters. You will support the Commission and the Electoral Commissioner, contributing to the preparation for the 2027 State General Election and other high‑profile initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal and policy advice to the NSW Electoral Commission, the Commissioner and internal stakeholders on electoral law matters.
• Support the Commission’s preparation for the 2027 State General Election and related high‑profile matters.
• Assist senior legal officers with regulatory prosecutions, statutory interpretation, instrument drafting and instructions to the Crown Solicitor’s Office.
• Prepare correspondence, research reports, submissions, briefing notes and other legal documents.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualifications and admission as a lawyer with a current or eligible NSW Practising Certificate.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal research and analysis.
• Political neutrality with no affiliation to political parties or lobbyists.
• Clear criminal record check.

Required skills

• Legal research and statutory interpretation.
• Drafting of legislative instruments and legal documents.
• Preparation of submissions and briefing notes.
