Legal Officer

About the role

The Department of Justice is seeking a Legal Officer to contribute to law reform and policy development within Queensland's justice system. You will work in Strategic Policy and Legislation, helping to shape primary and subordinate legislation across a broad range of justice matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide advice on justice policy issues and develop policy options, strategies, and initiatives.
• Draft, review, and implement less complex legislative and policy projects.
• Research and analyse justice policy issues, including civil, criminal, and administrative law areas.
• Collaborate with specialist teams and stakeholders to ensure coherent policy outcomes.
• Prioritise tasks and manage project timelines in line with team commitments.

Required profile

• Demonstrated understanding of emerging trends in justice policy and their impact on government and the community.
• Experience formulating policy and developing legislation, particularly in justice matters.
• Ability to work effectively in a team, exercising tact, discretion, and professional integrity.
• Strong written communication skills and capacity to engage with a range of stakeholders.
• Commitment to ethical, respectful, and culturally sensitive behaviour.
