Legal Officer

About the role

The Department of Justice is seeking a Legal Officer to contribute to law reform and policy development within Queensland's justice system. You will work in the Strategic Policy and Legislation (SPL) team, supporting the creation and implementation of legislative and policy initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide advice on justice policy issues and develop options, policies, and strategies.
• Draft, review, and implement less complex legislative and policy projects.
• Research and analyse justice policy matters across civil, criminal, and administrative law areas.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure policy alignment and legislative compliance.
• Prioritise projects and tasks in line with team commitments and deadlines.

Required profile

• Demonstrated understanding of emerging trends in justice policy and their impact on government and community.
• Experience formulating policy and developing legislation, especially in justice matters.
• Ability to work effectively in a team, exercising tact, discretion, and professional integrity.
• Strong written communication skills and capacity to engage with a range of stakeholders.
• Commitment to ethical, respectful, and culturally sensitive conduct.
