Legal Director – Privacy & Data

About the role

ANZ is seeking a senior lawyer to lead its enterprise‑wide privacy, data protection and AI legal capability. The Legal Director, Privacy & Data will head a centre of excellence that supports technology, risk, compliance and business teams across Australia and ANZ’s global operations.

Key responsibilities

• Set strategy and priorities for the Privacy & Data Legal team, building a high‑performing specialist capability.
• Provide senior legal advice on Australian privacy, data protection and emerging AI regulations.
• Shape enterprise data governance, privacy risk management, DPIAs/PIAs and compliance frameworks.
• Partner with Risk, Security and Data teams on regulatory uplift programmes and legislative reform.
• Lead legal oversight of AI, machine‑learning and advanced‑analytics initiatives, including responsible AI governance.
• Negotiate data‑protection addenda, privacy clauses and contractual standards for cloud, technology and outsourcing arrangements.
• Manage regulator engagements, privacy‑related inquiries, audits and investigations.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with extensive experience in privacy, data protection and technology law.
• Proven senior leadership experience, preferably within a large financial institution.
• Deep understanding of Australian privacy legislation and emerging AI regulatory landscape.
• Strong stakeholder management skills across legal, risk, security and technology functions.

Required skills

• Expertise in privacy law, data‑protection regulations and AI governance.
• Experience drafting and negotiating data‑protection agreements and privacy clauses.
• Ability to conduct DPIAs/PIAs and develop compliance frameworks.
