Legal Counsel

About the role

BYD is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its Melbourne office and support the rapid expansion of its electric vehicle business in Australia. Reporting to the APAS Legal Manager, you will handle a broad range of commercial, employment, regulatory and dispute matters across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on sales, delivery and service contracts, including drafting and negotiating Master Supply Agreements for corporate and government fleets.
• Provide expert guidance on Australian employment law, represent the company before the Fair Work Commission and manage internal HR legal issues.
• Offer generalist advice on Work Health and Safety obligations and insurance matters to mitigate organisational risk.
• Monitor compliance with Australian Design Rules, vehicle safety recalls and carbon‑emission standards under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.
• Maintain dealer and after‑sales agreements in line with the Automotive Franchising Code of Conduct.
• Review marketing and public‑relations material for compliance with the Competition and Consumer Act, focusing on green‑washing and EV performance claims.
• Manage high‑level consumer disputes and litigation, including commercial and product‑liability matters under Australian Consumer Law.
• Partner with sales, marketing and after‑sales teams to deliver commercially practical legal solutions.

Required profile

• LLB or JD degree and admission to practice law in an Australian State or Territory with a current practising certificate.
• Demonstrated experience in commercial contract negotiation, employment law, WHS, regulatory compliance and dispute resolution.
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross‑functional business teams in a fast‑growing environment.
