Legal Associate – Support Honourable Justice Kari

About the role

The Legal Associate will work directly with the Honourable Justice Kari, providing research, drafting and administrative support to facilitate the efficient operation of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1). This role involves assisting with case preparation, judgment drafting and courtroom duties for both first‑instance and appellate matters.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal research and analysis on family law matters and points of law.
• Prepare briefing materials, case summaries and draft judgments, including head notes and catch‑words.
• Enter and manage case data in the Court’s case management system.
• Support the Judge during hearings, including virtual courtroom operations.
• Assist with the day‑to‑day running of chambers and respond to enquiries.
• Travel interstate as required for appellate and first‑instance work.

Required profile

• Law degree with a strong academic record.
• One or more years of post‑admission legal experience (preferred).
• Excellent legal research, analysis and drafting abilities.
• High attention to detail, confidentiality and ethical standards.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic legal research resources.
• Ability to learn and use Court case management and virtual courtroom systems.
