Lawyer – Constitutional Law Team

About the role

Crown Law is seeking a qualified lawyer to join its Constitutional Law Team. You will provide high‑level legal advice on complex constitutional and human‑rights matters to government clients, including the Attorney‑General.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on Commonwealth and State constitutional law issues, such as notices under s.78B of the Judiciary Act 1903 and inconsistencies between laws.
• Interpret and apply limits on State power, including Chapter III of the Constitution and the implied freedom of political communication.
• Provide statutory interpretation and counsel on miscellaneous government law matters of fundamental importance.
• Support the Attorney‑General with ministerial correspondence, grants of fiat, and Human Rights Act 2019 matters, including notices under ss 52‑53 and Statements of Compatibility.
• Instruct the Solicitor‑General and other counsel in high‑court and federal court proceedings.

Required profile

• Law degree and admission to practice in Australia.
• Demonstrated expertise in constitutional, statutory and human‑rights law.
• Experience advising senior government officials and handling complex legal questions.
