Job description

About the role

Southern NSW Local Health District is recruiting an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join the newly evolving Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Queanbeyan Hospital as both a Staff Specialist/Senior Staff Specialist and Head of Department. The appointment is a permanent Staff Specialist/Senior Staff Specialist, with the Head of Department role held for a three-year term, extendable to five years depending on satisfactory performance; continuation beyond five years is by re-application. The postholder is primarily based at Queanbeyan Hospital, which is a 29-bed Level 3 acute care facility.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the SNSWLHD O&G service, acting as the escalation point for GP Obstetricians in the department.
  • Take part in outpatient clinic duties and on-call rosters for obstetrics; lead the establishment of a gynaecology clinic and hold a gynaecology theatre list.
  • Lead the O&G department strategically, clinically and operationally, including clinical governance, a culture of learning and best practice, and rostering for medical staff.
  • Develop and expand specialist gynaecology services and mentor GP Obstetricians and future clinicians.
  • Partner with executive, nursing, midwifery and allied health leaders to deliver integrated, patient-centred care.
  • Receive a management allowance and dedicated time for leadership and management, in addition to the minimum non-clinical support time for a full-time Staff Specialist/Senior Staff Specialist; the balance of clinical, non-clinical and leadership time is set in a job plan.

Required profile

  • FranzCOG-qualified specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
  • Demonstrated commitment to education, with experience in teaching and training.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and skills appropriate to a senior medical leadership role; experience managing a clinical unit, service or program is viewed positively.
  • Experience in clinical governance, quality improvement and risk management.
  • RANZCOG Associate Training Program Supervisor certification; if not already held, it is expected to be obtained.
  • Preferred to work 1.0 FTE, but part-time, job-share or other arrangements may be considered if operational needs are met.
