Geotechnical Engineer - Underground Gold Mine

About the role

Northern Star Resources is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer for its Underground Technical Services team at the South Kalgoorlie Operations. The role reports to the Senior Underground Geotechnical Engineer and covers the safe management and delivery of all geotechnical requirements. It is a residential 8/6 roster with 12-hour days, about a 25-minute commute from town to site, and a quarterly STI bonus of up to $18K per year subject to performance, plus premium private health insurance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert geotechnical advice for underground mining areas, ensuring safe and effective ground support systems.
• Initiate and deliver geotechnical improvement projects to boost productivity and profitability.
• Design mine levels and stope extraction plans with rock stress modelling, closure monitoring and stability analysis.
• Use lidar to monitor ground conditions and develop ground support strategies.
• Oversee QA/QC for ground support installation, underground scaling, rehabilitation plans and rock bolt testing.
• Maintain daily reporting and compliance tracking, and review and update the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
• Support the development of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring systems.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Underground geotechnical experience in a mechanised hard-rock underground mine.
• Current C-class Western Australian driver's licence (manual).
• Good communication skills and flexibility to adapt to improved procedures.
• Desirable: awareness of the Work Health and Safety Act and regulations, St John's Senior First Aid certificate.
