Financial Accountant

About the role

The Townsville City Council is seeking a motivated Financial Accountant to deliver accurate accounting services, technical advice and compliance reporting. Reporting to the Team Leader Asset Accounting and Insurance, you will support decision‑making across the council by maintaining high‑quality financial data and analysis.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and contribute to the Council’s financial statements and reports.
• Maintain the integrity of financial data and accounting systems.
• Provide expert accounting advice and ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards and relevant legislation.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify and implement process improvements and strengthen internal controls.
• Perform reconciliations, financial analysis and support asset accounting and insurance functions.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Business (Accounting) or equivalent qualification.
• 3‑5 years’ experience in financial accounting within a medium to large organisation.
• CA or CPA membership, or progress toward qualification (highly regarded).
• Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, compliance requirements and internal control frameworks.
• Excellent problem‑solving, communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Current Queensland “C” Class driver licence and commitment to workplace safety and council values.

What we offer

• Fixed‑term contract until 30 June 2027 (9‑day fortnight, 36.25 hrs/week).
• Salary range $102,639 – $109,563 per annum plus superannuation.
