Executive Director, Culture and Community

About the role

The Executive Director, Culture and Community leads a high‑impact portfolio within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships division. Reporting to the Deputy Director‑General, this senior position provides strategic leadership over cultural heritage legislation, community histories and reconciliation initiatives, ensuring programmes are delivered lawfully, respectfully and in line with government priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Administer the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Act 2003, delivering lawful and culturally appropriate outcomes.
• Lead sensitive programmes such as access to historical records and the National Redress Scheme, applying trauma‑informed and culturally respectful practices.
• Provide strategic advice to the Minister, Director‑General and senior leadership, influencing policy and programme direction.
• Represent the department at national and whole‑of‑government forums.
• Drive collaboration, strengthen governance, manage risk and foster innovation and continuous improvement.
• Build and lead high‑performing, inclusive teams, promoting a culture of accountability and respect.

• Strategic, results‑driven leader with a strong track record in regulatory leadership, policy implementation and service delivery.
• Demonstrated success delivering measurable outcomes in complex, regulatory environments.
• Excellent critical thinking, problem‑solving and judgement.
• Exceptional stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills across government, community and sector partners.
• Experience leading teams through change, driving performance, innovation and continuous improvement.
• Ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and contexts.
