Engineer – Energy System Planning

About the role

Join AEMO’s System Planning team to help design Australia’s future power system. You will use advanced power‑system analysis tools to assess performance, address emerging challenges and support the Integrated System Plan.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical support and advice on electricity planning and performance for safe, secure, and reliable operation of the power system.
• Contribute to key planning documents such as the Integrated System Plan, Electricity Statement of Opportunities and Transition Plan for System Security.
• Develop and enhance procedures and methodologies for planning studies.
• Engage with stakeholders and prepare high‑quality reports on network capability, performance and planning issues.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in engineering, mathematics, physics or related discipline.
• At least two years of engineering‑related work experience post‑graduation.
• Good knowledge of electrical transmission networks, generation in the NEM and gas market transmission systems.

Required skills

• Proficiency with power‑system analysis tools (PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerFactory) for load flow and fault level calculations.
• Strong report‑writing ability using Microsoft Word and Excel, with experience handling databases.
• Introductory programming experience.
• Understanding of transmission substation design, cost‑benefit assessment and probability‑based investment decisions.
