Director, Animal and Plant Biosecurity Research and Diagnostics
NSW Department of Primary Industries, Rural and Regional Development (DPIRD) · Menangle
Job description
About the role
The Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) at Menangle is recruiting a Director, Animal and Plant Biosecurity Research and Diagnostics. The Director provides full site leadership for the Institute, directing the work of around 150 staff across diagnostics and research, and chairs EMAI's Biosafety Committee. The role is based at EMAI with regular on-site presence, especially in the early stages, and calls for an externally focused leader who builds partnerships.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and deliver a science and research strategy that underpins NSW's animal and plant biosecurity objectives and aligns with national priorities
- Identify and evaluate co-investment opportunities and build the business case for scientific collaboration
- Drive the development of innovative, responsive diagnostic services for biosecurity clients
- Champion the value of EMAI's research and diagnostics function and build connections across the Agriculture and Biosecurity Group, research bodies, universities and industry
- Shape workforce planning and capability development, balancing research investment with operational and emergency response commitments
Required profile
- A reputation as a strong, proven leader in a field related to biosecurity, with significant governance, management and operational experience in research and diagnostics
- A research business mindset: advocating for research investment and connecting commercial, scientific and policy perspectives
- A background with a research and development corporation suits the role; a purely academic background is less likely to fit without broader industry or commercial experience
- A background in animal health may be well suited given the current balance of work at EMAI
- Tertiary qualifications in relevant sciences, or substantial demonstrated equivalent experience, are essential
Applications close on Sunday, 8 November 2026, with a cover letter and resume. The successful applicant may need to undergo a police check, health assessment and other assessments. The advertised salary is NSW Senior Executive Band 1, $269,540 to $295,234 inclusive of superannuation.
