Design Manager - Data Centre

About the role

A leading Tier 1 construction and property group, represented by IKG Talent, is looking for a Design Manager for a major hyperscale data centre campus near Melbourne, with capacity close to 1GW. The business is focused on locking in a Design Lead to drive the upcoming build, which includes a significant base build and data hall fit-out.

Key responsibilities

• Own end-to-end design management for the next Melbourne data centre, from early planning through to construction and commissioning.
• Act as the key interface between the contractor, client and consultant teams; you do not draw, but drive the programme and manage the consultants doing the detailed design.
• Lead multidisciplinary design workshops and coordinate MEP, structure and architecture, keeping buildability in mind given data centre programme pressures.
• Apply lessons learned from the live facility to the next stage, especially services coordination, long-lead equipment and commissioning readiness.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Design Manager on data centres or other mission-critical, services-heavy infrastructure such as hospitals, labs or large commercial buildings with complex MEP.
• Experience leading consultants, driving programmes and working under tight design and construction timeframes without a long front-end design period.
• Comfortable being client-facing and engaging with multiple senior stakeholders.
• Candidates currently overseas with relevant hyperscale or mission-critical experience are welcome.

Required skills

• Strong technical grounding in building services and design management, with deep services knowledge highly regarded.
• Understanding of how a data centre runs, beyond the paperwork side.
