Casual Research Phlebotomist – Concussion Study

About the role

The University of Queensland's Queensland Brain Institute is recruiting casual Research Phlebotomists to support the UQ Concussion Study, a partnership between World Rugby, Rugby Australia and the Great Public Schools Association that aims to develop a biomarker for concussion diagnosis and recovery. The study recruits participants from schools in South-East Queensland, collecting demographic, cognitive and bio-specimen data at different timepoints. Positions are based at the St Lucia campus, with travel to schools and study sites across Brisbane.

Key responsibilities

• Collect bio-samples, including phlebotomy, blood, saliva and finger-prick samples
• Provide support to school staff and participants at participating schools
• Keep records and facilitate data collection processes at schools
• Support study sites when needed

Required profile

• Certificate III in Pathology Collection (HLT37215) or an equivalent Australian recognised qualification
• Previous phlebotomy training and experience is essential; venepuncture on adolescents is highly regarded
• Reliable, organised and able to work self-directed in a busy environment
• Able to work with school staff and adolescent participants respectfully and give clear instructions
• Flexible availability, including out of hours and on Saturdays during the rugby season (May to September)
• Own reliable transport to study sites

Required skills

• Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Strong organisational skills and ability to keep accurate records
• Excellent interpersonal skills and autonomy

Training in other study procedures is provided.
