Business Manager – Science Operations

About the role

The Business Manager will lead the Science Operations team, driving research portfolio management, commercialisation and operational excellence across Queensland's Crop and Food Science division. Reporting to the General Manager, you will act as a trusted advisor and ensure high‑impact outcomes for the department.

Key responsibilities

• Manage development and delivery of project and program services, research commercialisation and partner with finance, procurement and HR.
• Negotiate contract terms, collaborate with Legal Officers and oversee execution of R&D and commercial agreements.
• Champion intellectual property (IP) protection and commercialisation strategies.
• Oversee performance reporting, providing strategic advice to senior leadership.
• Prepare complex reports, briefings, presentations and correspondence.
• Lead the creation and implementation of business management procedures across the Agri‑Science division.
• Build networks with industry, funders and stakeholders to inform strategic decisions.
• Supervise a multidisciplinary team, fostering continuous improvement and innovation.
• Ensure compliance with the Department’s Code of Conduct, employment equity, ethics and workplace health and safety.

Required profile

• Proven ability to negotiate, develop and administer business agreements with commercial partners.
• Strong knowledge of commercialisation processes and IP utilisation within a research environment.
• Interest or experience in managing different types of intellectual property.
• Diplomacy, leadership and the capacity to work collaboratively with senior stakeholders.
